Since my last post, I’ve been writing about my ham radio related activities in two Reddit communities, r/HamRadioHomebrew and r/T41-EP. They have mostly served as my blog over the past several years. I like the less formal nature of the post/comment format compared to what I had been posting here. The ability for spam free interaction with readers was also a plus (I’ve disabled comments here because of the constant spam).
Reddit has limits though. The single image comment restriction is the most annoying one for how I use the platform. The long-term availability of the information contained in my posts is important to me as well as they serve to document my work. These have always been low activity communities and given Reddit is a for-profit company, long-term access isn’t certain. Reddit could decide small communities such as these aren’t profitable and delete or restrict them. Reddit’s recent change to focus on weekly community activity instead of community member totals might be a step in this direction.
I don’t think Reddit will go this way, but who knows. So, it is time to start up may activities here again. I’ll start with some posts linking and copying some key content from my Reddit posts. That will be information that I refer to more often and don’t want to lose. I’ll likely continue with the less formal approach to writing that I’ve been using on Reddit. After all, these are mostly just documenting what I’ve been doing each day. They serve me better than my hand-written notes.
I will continue moderating the Reddit communities, but I don’t expect much activity there. However, posting there is probably the best way to contact me if you have any questions about what I post here. I’ll come up with something else if those communities go away. And don’t bother with PM. I won’t reply. I like everyone to benefit from a discussion, even if it’s just pointing out my bone-headed mistakes.
